Bali’s most promising young architect has fused traditional architecture with cool, minimalist interiors plus imaginative use of water to create an experience that does truly justify the name.
The largest of the three Matis villas, is a composite of five buildings. Four of these, containing the five air-conditioned bedrooms, two kitchens, two dining areas and numerous relaxation spaces, encircle the freestanding lounge and swimming pool. Rice terraces descend to meet the edge of the garden and the most pressing sound is the gentle rustling of the thatched roofs in the breeze. This holiday home is an exceptionally peaceful retreat capturing the true essence of traditional Bali.

To the left side of the entrance pathway, the furthest building houses the master bedroom. The mosquito-canopied bed is set in elevated blond terrazzo, leaving a seating ledge scattered with a casual array of cushions. Opposite the bed, a window seat overlooks the pool and large sliding doors access a sun terrace, completing the feel of natural ventilation. Antique Balinese carved doors open out into a delicious open-air bathroom where an enormous circular bath, shielded from the compound by a wrap around grey stone wall and bamboo blinds. Aged teak double doors lead to a paved passageway connecting the formal dining area.

The neighbouring structure includes a rectangular dining table ideal for formal dinner parties and a comfortable tempat duduk (wide seat) for after-dinner entertainment. A spherical interior wall encloses a modern stylish kitchen, enabling staff to attend to your every whim. Spiralling stairs lead up to a curvaceous snug with complementary peaks in the thatched roof capturing picturesque views of the adjacent countryside.

The second and third bedrooms are home to he third building structure. Both rooms have full-length windows and double sized glass-panelled doors, and each en-suite bathroom has an exquisite sunken bath and decorative tiled border. The bedrooms both have mosquito-canopies and the third bedroom boasts an antique four-poster bed.
A second kitchen, informal eating area and the fourth bedroom make up the ground floor of the most northern structure in the compound. Bleached wooden stairs lead up to the fifth bedroom that contains a magnificent four-poster bed tastefully decorated in deep purple fabrics to match the dark wood base. A diagonal terrace levels with the top of the rice terraces and is a great spot to survey the rest of the property.

Topped by a tiang (architectural crown), the conical roofed structure of the main living area is supported by cream pillars. Distinctive furnishings include the rough-hewn wooden table and aged teak chests. A horseshoe couch makes a delightful shaded location from which to view the kidney-shaped swimming pool, sun decks and garden seating below.

Three full-time cooks
Trained in the preparation of both local and international cuisine. A menu is provided, and the cooks will do all the market shopping.

Villa complex manager
Oversees and coordinates the staff & property and is available to assist guests during their stay.

Seven gardeners and pool attendants
Tending the garden and the grounds of the villa. They ensure that the facilities of the villa run smoothly during your visit.

Eight security guards
Their duties are to patrol the grounds and guard the entrance of the villa 24 hours a day ensuring your security.

Twelve maids
Responsible for housekeeping duties, taking care of your daily laundry and providing waiter service around the grounds and buildings of the property.
