Full Description: Black furnishings, grey polished-concrete walls, black India stone and an
abundance of lush green vegetation of the hanging gardens of Babylon variety
surround you. There are four bedrooms – including a mammoth master suite,
complete with a sitting room, which covers the whole of the upper floor –
pergola-roofed garden bathrooms, an open-air living and dining pavilion, and a
relaxation gazebo. There is no garden to speak of, just a large deck surrounding
the pool, but through the many windows are views of rice fields and banana
plantations, and glimpses of the ocean between a smattering of country
residences, Hindu temples and farmers’ huts; it’s so close to the beach and it’s
so quiet!
The super-comfortable designer furniture will make you more horizontal than you
thought possible. The dining table can comfortably accommodate eight, seated on
long black-cushioned benches. Villa Sirocco is aptly named after the strong
winds that blow in from the Sahara, for the villa’s ventilation is perfect. Huge
windows open up on two sides inviting the gentle breezes in. They blow through
chandeliers made from hundreds of capiz shell discs that sing together in a
chaotic Siroccan symphony as they hang from the high vaulted ceilings of the
living room.
Sirocco is the sort of pad that works well for both families and groups of
friends; its layout is spacious and social. At sunset, slide back the picture
windows in the dining area, order a glass of wine and imagine the possibilities
as you take in the rural scene and the distant volcanoes, while the
ever-attentive staff prepare you a complimentary Balinese feast to welcome you
on your first night. After this you can order provisions from a selection menu.
Location
Villa Sirocco is at the end of a row of four, jointly-staffed villas of the same
architectural design, conveniently located 400m from the beach at Batubelig.
This developing area is still surrounded by rice fields, and there are a number
of small local restaurants to support the many luxury villas that have been
built here. Within three minutes’ walk, at Batubelig Beach, there is a charming
warung (local restaurant) with tables that spill out into the garden (great for
watching the sunset), and a rope suspension bridge that leads over a lagoon to
the beach. A few minutes’ walk up the beach brings you to a hotel and restaurant
at Brawa. This sweeping beach is popular with surfers but the currents are
strong so it is not very safe for swimming. Just one kilometre from the villa in
the opposite direction is a small resort with spa and yoga studio, a
delicatessen, and Trattoria, the Italian restaurant at the Canggu Club.
Accommodation
Villa Sirocco’s owners have been generous with space, and the rooms are vast.
The building is designed in an L-shape around a 12m x 4m swimming pool, with the
four bedrooms housed in a two-storey dwelling next to a large, split-level
living and dining pavilion complete with open-plan kitchen. A 3.5m relaxation
pavilion sits at the far end of the pool.
The timber pool deck extends into the living room, where it subtly merges into a
solid teakwood floor. This area is dominated by two L-shaped sofas with black
cushions that are at least two metres wide and sit either side of some steps up
to the dining area. Beside each sofa is a large coffee table; one in wood, and
the other in black-painted steel, weighing a ton. To the right of the living
area is a water cascade flanked by two small conifers, and to the left and
directly ahead are two walls of glass. The dining area is furnished with a long
wooden table and soft-cushioned benches. To one side is a small kitchen equipped
for guest use and behind this is the service kitchen, where magic happens.
There are three bedrooms on the ground floor (one with a TV/DVD), all in dark
grey polished concrete with queen-size beds, daybeds, walk-in closets and
enchantingly-overgrown, outdoor jungle bathrooms (all with showers and two with
shallow sculptured bathtubs open to the sky). The upstairs master suite has a
queen-size bed on one side, a large sitting area on the other, and picture
windows all around. There is an LCD TV/DVD at the end of the bed, a sunken
bathtub next to the bed, and an ensuite bathroom with rice field views (through
windows tinted for privacy). Again, the sitting area showcases the massive,
signature black couches. The final treat is a spacious, shady outdoor roof
terrace furnished with another enormous built-in sofa. All bedrooms have
air-conditioning, mosquito nets and fans.
